WHAT IS A THERAPEUTIC JOINT INJECTION?

Therapeutic Joint Injections are a minimally invasive treatment option used to relieve pain. Corticosteroids are injected directly into the affected joint. Joint injections are administered under local anesthesia and only cause mild, brief discomfort for patients.

REASON FOR THE PROCEDURE

Corticosteroids reduce inflammation and can provide pain relief for several days to several months. Therapeutic Joint Injections are routinely used to relieve pain caused by inflammatory joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis and gout.

THE PROCEDURE

This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. At Excel Imaging, your Esse Health Radiologist will numb the injection site then position you in a CT Scanner. CT uses low dose X-rays from multiple angles creating images to guide the placement of the needle. Once in position, contrast material will be released to confirm the route the medication will take once it is injected. Next, the medication (typically a mix of anesthetic and anti-inflammatory agents) will be administered. The anesthetic can provide immediate pain relief lasting 4-6 hours while the corticosteroid takes effect approximately 1-2 days after the injection, reaching maximum effectiveness within 5-7 days. The duration of the pain relief varies depending on the severity and reversibility of the patient's condition. If a therapeutic effect is achieved, several injections per year can be performed with few long term consequences. Your Esse Health Radiologist is well trained in performing diagnostic and therapeutic injections of multiple joints, including shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, sacroiliac, knee, ankle and foot.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS, RISKS, AND COMPLICATIONS

Side effects may include pain, swelling or discoloration at the injection site and an increase in blood sugar levels. Potential risks could include bleeding, infection or allergic reaction. In some cases, corticosteroids may cause temporary water retention, flushing (hot flashes), mood swings and insomnia.
